As part of my university research project, I wanted to know if other neurodivergent adults struggled with money the way I did—finding it hard to apply for jobs, get past interviews, feel supported at work, manage spending, or break the debt cycle.
This UK-wide study brings together the voices of 289 neurodivergent adults, many diagnosed later in life or self-identifying. Their stories reveal how impulsive spending, money shame, procrastination, and difficulty budgeting are tied not to “bad habits” but to executive function, emotional regulation, and a lack of tailored support.
Many also told us that they would have achieved higher earnings or career progression if workplaces had provided better understanding, reasonable adjustments, and protection from bullying.
This isn’t just research—it’s a call to action for fairer, more inclusive financial systems and support.
We want fairer, healthier, and more resilient communities. We cannot ignore how neurodivergent adults experience money any longer!
